FRACTIONAL CMO

Fractional CMO Services for
B2B SMB’s

Marketing leadership that comes with the execution attached. You get a strategy built for your business, and you get the person who actually builds it.

Most fractional CMOs hand you a plan and leave you to find someone to run it. Ariad Partners has been doing both since 2011 for companies with 10 to 50 employees that need senior-level marketing thinking without a senior-level marketing payroll.

The short answer

What is a fractional CMO?

A fractional CMO is an experienced marketing executive who leads your marketing strategy, budget, and team on a part-time basis. You get senior marketing leadership without the salary, benefits, and equity of a full-time chief marketing officer, usually through a monthly retainer rather than an employment agreement.

The word fractional describes the time commitment, not the seniority. A fractional CMO owns marketing direction the way a full-time CMO would; they simply do it across a set number of days each month instead of five days a week.

For a small business, that means someone finally owns the answer to the questions nobody has time for. Who are we actually selling to? Why would they pick us? What should we spend the budget on next quarter, and how will we know whether it worked?

The gap

The part most fractional CMO engagements leave out

There is a structural gap in how this service is usually sold, and it is worth understanding before you sign anything.

A traditional fractional CMO sets direction, defines the plan, and holds people accountable for it. Someone else does the work. For a company with an in-house marketing team already in place, that arrangement makes sense; the team exists, and what it lacks is leadership.

For a company with 10 to 50 employees, one overloaded marketing coordinator, and maybe a freelancer, it means something different. You are buying a plan you cannot execute. So you hire an agency to run it, and now you are managing two relationships, paying two retainers, and sitting in the middle translating between them when they disagree.

Ariad Partners is built the other way around. The person who writes your strategy is the person who does the SEO work, writes the content, builds the HubSpot workflows, and sends you the monthly reporting.

Is this you?

When a fractional CMO makes sense for your business

  • You have 10 to 50 employees and a marketing budget that cannot absorb a six-figure executive hire

  • Marketing decisions currently land on the founder, the sales leader, or whoever has time

  • You have tried an agency and gotten activity reports without pipeline

  • Your sales cycle is long and research-driven, so buyers find you months before they call you

  • You have a marketing coordinator or junior marketer who needs direction more than they need another tool

  • Referrals have carried you this far, and you know that is not a growth plan

What’s included

What your fractional CMO actually does

Every engagement starts with the same question: where is pipeline supposed to come from, and what is currently in the way? What follows depends on the answer, but the work generally falls into these areas.

Strategy and positioning

Ideal customer profile, buyer personas, competitive positioning, messaging that survives contact with your sales team, and a marketing plan tied to how your business actually makes money.

Search and AI visibility

Technical SEO and keyword strategy, content that ranks and gets cited in AI Overviews, and the AEO and GEO work behind your AI search visibility, so AI assistants mention you when a buyer asks for a recommendation.

Content and demand generation

Editorial planning, pillar pages and topic clusters, landing pages and offers, email nurture sequences, and the campaigns that turn early research into a sales conversation.

Systems and reporting

HubSpot implementation and cleanup, lifecycle stages, attribution you can trust, and a monthly report that tells you what moved and what it cost.

Comparison table

These three options solve different problems, and picking the wrong one is expensive. Let’s compare them honestly.

Before you hire

How to tell a good fractional CMO from an expensive one

This is the question buyers actually ask each other, and almost no service page answers it, because a real answer risks talking someone out of the sale. Let’s answer it anyway.

01

Who does the work?

Ask directly, and ask who will still be on your account in month six. The common failure pattern is an engagement that starts with a senior person and quietly migrates to a junior account manager, at which point the strategy stops being enforced by anyone who understands it.

02

What number do you own?

A fractional CMO who owns “the strategy” owns nothing you can measure. Ask what metric they are accountable for, how it will be reported, and what happens if it does not move by a specific date.

03

How much time, and distributed how?

Ask for days per month and when they fall. Advisory arrangements are cheaper because they are lighter, and light involvement produces recommendations rather than results.

04

What ships in the first 60 days?

A discovery period is reasonable; every good engagement starts with one. Two months of discovery before anything reaches your website is a different thing, and for a company your size it is time you cannot get back.

05

Have you done this at my size, in my industry?

Scaling a venture-backed SaaS company past $50M does not transfer cleanly to a 30-person engineering firm with a nine-month sales cycle. Ask for the closest comparable engagement they have run and what went wrong with it.

06

What happens when we outgrow you?

There is a good answer to this. Some of the strongest fractional engagements end with the fractional leader hiring and onboarding the full-time marketer who replaces them. Ask whether that is on the table.

Who we work with

Industries we serve

Ariad Partners has run inbound programs since 2011 for professional services firms, manufacturers, B2B SaaS companies, IT and managed services providers, and healthcare organizations. These share something that shapes how the work gets done: long sales cycles, technical buyers, and a research process that happens well before anyone fills out a form.

The process

How we work together

01

Inbound strategy review

Before anything is quoted, we look at what is actually happening. Where does your traffic come from, what does the search landscape look like in your category, and where are buyers finding your competitors instead of you? You get the findings whether or not we work together.

02

Strategy and roadmap

Positioning, ICP, and a prioritized plan for the first two quarters, sequenced by what will move pipeline soonest rather than what is easiest to start.

03

Build

The foundational work gets done: site and technical SEO, cornerstone content, HubSpot configuration, forms and lifecycle stages, and the tracking that makes the rest of it measurable.

04

Run and report

Monthly execution against the roadmap, with a report that shows what changed and a standing call to decide what happens next. The plan adjusts as the data comes in.

Let’s find out what is actually holding your pipeline back

An inbound strategy review is a real look at your search visibility, your competitive position, and where buyers in your category are going instead of to you. You get the findings either way.
